Re: AAMA TIR A9-91 v. 2005 Aluminum design manual

Jim,

According to 1986 AA Spec (1997 UBC Chapter 20 Tables 20-II-A and 20-I-D), the allowable bearing stress for 6063T6 aluminum is 24,000psi(40ksi/1.65<63 ksi/2.34).

Subject: AAMA TIR A9-91 v. 2005 Aluminum design manual

There are differences in calculation methods between the AAMA TIR A9-91 and the Aluminum Design Manual.

For example, TIR A9-91 calculates bolt bearing in aluminum as FbDt (or FbyDt/1.65) where Fby = bearing yield strength of aluminum.  For 6063-T6, it uses 24000psi.  The 2005 Aluminum Design Manual uses the allowable bolt bearing as 2FtuDt/1.95(factor of safety) with Ftu=30000psi for 6063-T6.  The difference amounts to about 30% more capacity per the Aluminum Design Manual.

The separate 2/3 adjustment for slotted holes is consistent between documents.

Fb when determined from the Aluminum Design Manual Design Guides and referenced section 3.4.5 for 6063-T6 is 31000psi.  This also equates close to 2*30000psi/1.95, but is still far greater than 24000psi.

My questions are:

1. Is AAMA TIR A9-91 (technically) superseded by the newer Aluminum Design Manual?  The TIR has not been updated since 1991 (the 2000addendum adds to, but doesn't update the 1991 original).  The TIR document does reference the Specification for Aluminum Structures by the AA (page 8 of TIR A9-91), but the referenced table is not in the current design manual.

2. The difference in the allowable bearing stress is substantial - where would TIR A9-91 arrive at a number like 24000psi for 6063-T6?  Has the material spec changed since 1991?  Is there a more conservative way to arrive at allowable bearing stress than the published values in the Aluminum Design Manual?

Thanks in advance,
Jim Wilson

RE: Water heater bracing THANKS!

Ralph,

I faxed over that copy of the 2001 CPC.  Steve was right; your document appears to be referencing the Uniform Plumbing Code.  I preceded the fax with an email directly to you, but it must not have gone through.

In any case, Section 510.5.1 does end on that page.  Hope it helps.

Ralph,

It appears to be a typo - shouldn't it be a plumbing code?  UPC Section 510.5 "Water heaters shall be anchored or strapped to resist horizontal displacement due to earthquake motion."

I assume this page included all of section 510.1.

Great resource, this list!  ;)

An "Earthquake Insurance Retrofitting Information Form" asks for confirmation that a residential water heater is "double strapped to prevent movement in a seismic event that meet the minimum requirements of the 1997 UBC Code, Section 510.5."

I can't find any such section, nor any reference to it in code analysis books.

Could this be a typo?  If anyone has the referenced section could they fax it to me at 510-215-2430?  Can anyone refer me to any specific *UBC* requirements for water heater bracing?

(Yes, I know the UBC is history, but the insurance industry apparently doesn't know it.)

If you double click on the member you're trying to rotate, a dialog box called "Information for Member xx" will open. Under the "General" tab is a subgroup called "orientation" with an "x Axis Rotate" option.

Can also try the "Primary Data" tab in the Member spreadsheet. Input

RE: Rotating members about long axis

In Risa 2D it's Modify > Members > Member Properties > Orientation.

Does anyone know how, in RISA, to rotate a member about its longitudinal
axis? Can't make the std "rotate" do it and I thought there was a function
in "members".

RE: Obama-Care: This Is What It Will Be Like

I disagree Ben. You do not end a thread by going on for three paragraphs to
criticize someone.
I am tired of exercising my delete key on this. Let's just stop.

Look, let me put an end to this thread. Bill has a problem - many of us
who know him personally and who have spoken with him by land line will
confirm this. I am not at liberty to discuss Bill's issues, but I
believe it is best not to respond to any of his e-mails. This simply
adds fuel to his fire.
As to the health care issue, I would assume from Bill's perspective if
he lost his job and his insurance benefits (assuming that his wife is
working for a firm that covers the family) he can be supported by his
state if they support disability coverage like California, Illinois and
Wisconsin does from my personal knowledge of family and friends who are
physically disabled. This makes Bill dependent on the State for his
health care which is no different than Medi-Cal in California and
whatever welfare is called in other states. His hypocrisy negates any of
his arguments.
I'm sure this will fire up additional responses if not a phone call, but
in the future it is best to ignore discussions on any topics outside the
structural engineering profession - I learned a long time ago that while
friends are made and lost on this list, it is often best to avoid
discussions with those who you can respect and disagree with, but who
are not inflamed by topics that historically set off those with strong
arguments for one side or other than can be debated on an intelligent
level even if there is no solution or the outcome is to accept your
differences and not let it destroy the admiration and friendship you
built on a personal / professional level.

I know, you were joking, and that's why you are a clown.

So, stop monkeying around and act like a professional, if you are one and you can handle it.

I wish some of you would come out and criticize Bill Polhemus for the barrage of insults and lame comments he's been making, especially the latest one toward Moustafa Gouda even after appologizing for the first insult. If that's not an embarrassement to the list members, I don't know what is.

Insult?

Hey, I didn't call him "fool" or "clown" or "idiot" or anything like that.

I mean, if you said something like that, it WOULD be insulting, wouldn't it?

Never a big EFR fan. Aside from Asimov and Jack Vance, my SF interest was post-"Golden Age" especially the 60s New Wave like Ellison and Gene Wolfe (e.g.)

I'm in preliminary negotiations with a small firm in another city to
open an office here.

We're talking about a modest base salary plus a bonus structure based
upon work I bring in.

My question is: "how is that typically formulated?"

It seems to me that a formula of some kind is "standard" in such a
case. What sort of formula have you seen along this line?

Robert,

Am I missing something?  I only saw time-lapse photography of the construction (which I further time-lapsed with my mouse), but no testing.  I want to see what happens after it goes on the shake table!

Here is a link to a video showing a 6 story wood structure undergoing a shake table test with seismic loading greater than the Northridge earthquake by 1.8 times, and easily surviving.  Enjoy.
