Question was asked:
In which conditions torsional buckling of columns will be more critical =
than lateral buckling? I read in a book that torsional buckling in CROSS =
shape columns may govern the allowable axial stress, but there was no =
specific reason mentioned. Has anybody experience in this area?
Thanks,

ANSWER:
The slenderness ratio has a lot to do with it.
High slenderness: usually bending dominates (Euler)
Low slenderness: usually plasticity governs
Intermediate range: Open sections tend to buckle in torsion-with-bending mode.
Examples: CROSS columns and angles.
