RE: Notched Beam

If the blocking at the bottom flange extended out or nearly out the width of
the 6" notch, why could you not assume the full PSL section resists the
shear? Another way to look at it would be if you were to cut off the 7"
thick piece above the top flange and still wanted to support the beam, could
you make it work?

Your drawing is correct. I assumed all bearing on the
top flange and used the NDS (2001 Edition) Eq. 3.4-3
to calculate allowable shear.
