RE: 64 bit computers systems

Another argument against going with a 64 bit system that nobody mentioned:  Even if you have 32 Gigs of memory in your new system, your engineering applications will (most likely) not be able to use more than that 3.5 or 4 Gigs!!  
 
What I'm getting at is that your application was most likely compiled to work primarily on 32 bit systems. That will mean that Windows will limit it to a 32 bit adressing space.... Therefore, you're still stuck with essentially the same memory limitations that you had before.  The only way you would benefit is if the software company compiled a version of their program that was specifically designed to work on a 64 bit system. 
 
Unfortunately, it's a total Catch-22.  Why would a software company re-write their programs for 64 bit when those systems are such a small percentage of the market?  But, then why would someone buy a 64 bit system unless there were already software available for it?

Ok.  I think I understand.  This is why I am asking, I am building a new computer with these components:

 

ASUS AM2S90 Motherboad

AMD Athlon dual core 6400 AM2 3.2Ghz

4G (2x@G) sorry about stating a dual core earlier, I meant dual sticks

(2) - MSI 2600XT 512MB DDR4 PCIE Diamond video (crossfire enabled)

and I was not sure if I needed to update to the 64 bit windows, I have been getting conflicting advice from some of the techs around here, as of this message I will be sticking with XP Pro
