Structural Engineering: RE: Building codes in Dubai, UAE

Dear Mr.Anantha,

I think you have asked a very important question. In UAE, there are no
building design codes. Each municipality (Dubai,Sharjah,Jebel Ali
etc..)and industrial zones have set their own standards or regulations
which will briefly describe certain minimum criteria to be followed in
Design. Here the consultants specify the use of codes. Both British and
American codes are followed in design.

Because of deflection both fixes would result in a
need to shore.

I am unclear on the vibration problems. When checking
floor vibration (I.e. people walking on floor)
standard practice is to assume composite construction
for checking vibration even if shear studs are not
used. If this assumption is valid then one would not
expect lack of studs to result in vibration problem
unless some damage occured as a result of lack of
composite action.

Since either solution seems feasible I would let the
Contractor make the choice.

Also do not forget to tell the Contractor that unless
he wants to rebuild part of the building as per the
original drawings, he needs to agree to pay you for
your time.

Most of Dubai's high rise are designed by multinational consultants
based at
Dubai. Hence International Codes are extensively used in this part of
world.
Steel designs are based on AISC and BS 5950 as well as MBMA.
Building permits are mandatory to begin Project Execution. It is not
that
easy to get permits.
