RE: subgrade modulus

The formula noted below could be a little misleading. "Settlement"
implies to me a long-term deformation, whereas the modulus relates to
short-term deformation. I would say the formula is:

applied bearing pressure/immediate soil deformation = modulus of
subgrade reaction

It also should be noted that the modulus is typically based on a
standard test with a plate of a particular size. The modulus must be
adjusted based on actual bearing area.
