Lawyers don't control everything. People retain lawyers because they 
want the illusion of control.

Now you're getting *technical*!  No, they don't, but when it's "us against them" they pretty much do.  When it's two lawyers my understanding is that the one with the higher billing rate wins, ain't that so?  ;)
