A waler is basically a horizontal member used in excavation and other types of soli retention structures and is analogous to a girt in building construction.

OK, In an earlier post, reference was made to a "waler", after a cursor search I am unable to find out exactly what this is. Please give me a lead to the engineering definition of a waler.
